Club Hockey is very similar to NCAA hockey, with the same types of eligibility requirements for players, and can give young athletes a chance to continue their hockey career while attending WMU. There are hundreds of teams among 3 different men's divisions in the U.S., with the ACHA serving as the sole governing body for club hockey in the United States.
The D1 and D3 programs at WMU are similar in that they both play highly competitive hockey against other universities. Typically, what sets D1 and D3 apart is the maturity in skill levels of the players, with D3 being a starting point and steppingstone for most athletes that want to play at the highest level of ACHA. The programs work together to develop players who wish to make the jump to Division 1.
The American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) is the governing body for club hockey in the United States. At the Division 1 level, there are over 70 teams that compete for the National Championship each season, and many more at the Division 2 and 3 level.
The Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference (MCHC) is one of the premier leagues in the country. This conference consistently produces National Champions and sends many teams to the national tournament every year.
The conference includes Aquinas College, Calvin University, Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Michigan State University, and the Stallions in the West Division.
The East Division includes Oakland University, Northwood University, University of Michigan, Lawrence Tech University, Adrian College, and Central Michigan University.
The Stallions are part of the Sports Club Council at Western Michigan University. While they are not directly funded by the University, the SCC helps to reimburse some costs associated with club sports each semester. Each player offered a spot on the team does pay to participate in the program, with the average full-season cost being around $2,500.
Yes! The Stallions play out of Lawson Ice Arena, located on campus. The Stallions have a locker room at the rink, offering a professional environment to aid in the quest for a national championship.
